In this interview, we chat to Jaynika about when she decided to make the leap to freelance, how she finds working for herself and the importance of having the right support around you on the journey.

To kick things off, tell us a bit about your background and how you ended up working for yourself?

In the early days of my design career, I fine-tuned my craft working in a print, web media and digital design studio, helping businesses stand out from the pack through powerful visual design.

Was there a defining moment when you knew it was time to make the leap and do your own thing?

I decided to take the leap after my first son was born, I thought it was a good time then to jump in, not go back to my old job and see how it went. I wanted the flexibility to work around my family and running my own small business allows me to connect with my clients at their level, providing everything they need to move forward with a killer new brand identity.

What was your biggest fear before you started working for yourself?

Being good enough and making it work.

What advice would you give to others to help them overcome fear and make the leap to self employment?

Go for it, and jump in! I started by setting up the basic business foundations and getting a business coach to help and support me along the way. I’ve also joined groups like Cool Wow Collective to network and connect with other like-minded creatives.

What is the best and worst part of working for yourself?

The best are the flexibility, working and dictating your own hours, working with the clients you want to work with, and collaborating with other like-minded creatives.

The worst are boundary setting, work hours and knowing when to log off. Loneliness is another one – at the end of the day it’s just you so to have a groups like Cool Wow to connect with is great!

Let's talk morning routines, what do you do to set your day up for success?

Gym or pilates class and morning coffee from a local fave.

Name three qualities you need to succeed as a freelancer?

Flexibility, Discipline, Boundaries, Passion (sorry, that’s 4!)

What role has community played in your success as a freelancer?

It plays a huge role! Community and collaboration always over competition. I build a relationship with my clients and become their brand and design partner in their business.

Finally, tell us a little about your business and where people can find you?

I'm a freelance graphic designer based on the banks of the beautiful Murray River at Echuca Moama. I'm a passionate creative, freedom seeker and lover of all things design. I specialise in branding, identity design, brand communications, editorial layout, publication design and print. For more than 14 years, I've been helping business up-level and elevate their brand's full potential through perfectly executed design solutions.
